How resistance can help us in the fight against pathogens!

Every year, antibiotic resistance claims the lives of over 4.7 million people worldwide. In his latest blog, Sander explores how resistance itself might hold the key to fighting this global health crisis. He explains how bacteria undergo major “renovations” to survive antibiotics—changing locks, installing molecular pumps, and more. But these changes come at a cost: while some adaptations protect against one drug, they can make bacteria more vulnerable to another. This phenomenon, known as collateral sensitivity, opens the door to smarter therapies. By strategically combining or cycling antibiotics, doctors can exploit the weaknesses that come with resistance and treat infections more effectively.
